Local Agencies
- All states have
agencies that provide useful information specifically
about your state. This includes information about occupations
-- what they pay, the training required, whether it
is a growing field, and so on. You will also be able
to find out about job openings, training programs,
financial aid, apprenticeships, and military careers.
- On the Internet
you can do a search with an engine like Google. For
example, by typing in "North Carolina occupational
information" you will find many useful sites. Try it.
You will be impressed. Then, try it for your state.
Tip: be sure to put quotation marks around your search
terms, like this: " (search terms) "
- You can also go
to America's
Career Resources Network (ACRN) web site for the
email address and phone number of the ACRN in your
state (these are sometimes called SOICCs). Their mission
is to provide: "critical occupational and career development
resources to assist students, from youth to adults,
in making informed career decisions and securing meaningful
employment."
- Your state employment
security agency is a good source.
- And, finally, don't
forget your local library -- an excellent resource.
