Learn about Occupations

There are many excellent career information websites. Our five favorites are listed below.

Note: As outstanding as these websites are, do not rely solely on them for information. They are open to error. They did not forecast the recent Great Recession, for example. We also highly recommend methods described in Learn More About the Jobs that Interest Me. They can give you valuable information you can get no other way.

1. The Occupational Outlook Handbook gives accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive information on occupations. It describes approximately 250 jobs, covering 90% of all workers -- earnings, training and education needed, working conditions, skills required, advancement opportunities, projected growth, related jobs, and sources of additional information.
   
   
2. America's Career InfoNet provides extensive information for the nation and specific states.  For example you can learn about wages, job market trends, and the skills needed for specific occupations.
   
   
3. Career Videos. See "real people doing real work." You choose from nearly 550 occupations.
   

4. Find targeted local and state career information at government agencies.
   
   
5. If you're interested in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) occupations, explore the careers section of Science Buddies. In addition to job outlook and other occupation information, you'll be able to read interviews with people working in that career and for some, watch career videos.
